Advice

Be careful with wet or water damaged chimneys; dry them out completely, and then build small fires for the first few uses. If the chimney is not completely dry, heat from a fire can condense water into steam, which can cause damage.

Water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Have an electrician check the plugs and wiring on appliances as well as walls affected by flooding. Do not plug in your appliances until you are certain it is safe!

Time is critical.  Don't get dressed or search for valuables.  Keep low to the ground and grab a towel or a piece of clothing to cover your nose and mouth, as one breath of smoke or gas may be enough to kill.  Follow your escape route and get out of the house fast.

Don't wait for an actual fire to be prepared.  Create an escape plan from each room in the house, practice, arrange for a safe place to meet outside the home...and don't forget the pets!

Be careful of any appliance that smokes or has an unusual smell.  Replace it or have it repaired immediately.  Don't use frayed or cracked electrical cords or overload extension cords.  Fuse boxes should never be tampered with.

Keep space heaters a minimum of 3 feet away from everything and never leave them unattended.  Kids and pets should always keep their distance.

Sleep with the door closed - it's important to keep deadly heat and smoke out of your bedroom, giving you more time to escape.

About six months after a flooding event, check wood floors for signs of shrinkage or rot. Further repair work may be neccessary.

Water-damaged materials should be dried and cleaned within two or three days of water removal. Waiting longer than this can cause the development of mold, which poses a health hazards. If mold has already developed, vulnerable persons, such as infants, the elderly, or those with asthma, should avoid the area while cleaning occurs.

Mildew is a particularly dangerous type of mold that causes damage mainly in fabrics. However, the presence of mildew and other molds can also be hazardous to your health. It can trigger cold-like symptoms as well as asthma attacks. Living in a house with high mold levels is dangerous, especially for those with upper respiratory conditions, as tiny mold spores are easily inhaled deep into the lungs.
